I never ever thought of the Bobby Bitman character as Mafia connected. To me that has fascist tone to it.

I was expecting the mob connection to be more overt. Kept waiting for the threat I assumed was coming. Not even mentioned.

Title is wrong. This character by Eugene Levy is not a mafia connected comedian, he is meant to personify the cheesy over the top television hosts and guests during the Carson era.

I'm sure there was a mob gag related to Levy's Bittman character at some point, but not in this skit. Bobby Bittman was one of Levy's most frequently-used characters, based on a variety of self-absorbed comedians who appeared on talk shows during that era. In all seriousness. ;)

The cast of SCTV were so in tune to the world around them . Be it entertainment, politics or history the nuances evident in every episode are indicative of how well read and intelligent these writers and actors are. The best of the best.

Dick Cavett was so awful. Somewhere on youtube there is a video of him with Oscar Petersen, and it is soo cringe inducing. A deeply, deeply racist man, and a cultural ignoramus, who somehow got the reputation for smarts and was considered a "liberal," whatever that ever meant in american life exactly, means about as much as "conservative."

Moranis and Dan Ackroyd liked to perform the pseudo-intellectual spoof characters.
